There are numerous historical and heritage sites to visit in the Killarney area. Standing stones 4,000-5,000 years old, bronze age mining, early christian churches and abbeys dating from the 7th century including Muckross Friary, Aghadoe and Inisfallen Island. There are a number of fine old Castles including Ross, Ballymalis and Dunloe to visit.
Killarney is an ideal base to tour the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula where you will find many important historical sites. The Skelligs, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are situated 8 miles off the coast. Monks built a monastery on a rock 600 feet above the sea in the 7th centaury. There are daily boat trips to the Skelligs from Caherciveen and Portmagee.
